Solid roundup, and it accidentally captures the funny part of 2026: we now have twelve tools that write code, build apps, design sites and take notes, and the bottleneck has quietly moved to the machine running all of them. Mine ends most days with about thirty processes I have no memory of opening. If that's a familiar shape of pain, I built a tiny macOS menu bar utility for exactly it β€” github.com/p32929/boom β€” one click force quits every user app while leaving Finder, Dock and the system UI alone. Aggressively not an AI tool, which after a list like this is almost restful.

A monthly 'tools everyone is talking about' list quietly admits its own problem: if the cast rotates this fast, none of it is the durable layer. The half-life of a technical skill is now under two and a half years, and tool-specific knowledge decays faster still. Learn the workflow shape, not the vendor. Vendors churn. The shape doesn't.

For transparency, my book The Next Rung (Practical Inspiration Publishing, out January) covers which capabilities outlast the churn. thenextrung.co
